The Sm antigen comprises a family of small proteins which form the Sm core particle of the U-small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particles (U-snRNPs); these complexes perform important steps in the splicing of precursor mRNA molecules. The Sm particle consists of 7 proteins: B/B' (alternatively spliced versions of the B protein), D1, D2, D3, E, F and G. The B/B' and D proteins (particularly D1) are the main autoantigens of the Sm particle, although rare cases of anti-Sm E/F/G autoantibodies have been described.

Sm antibodies are a very specific marker for SLE: although they occur only with a prevalence of 20-30%, their detection virtually proves a SLE diagnosis.

U-snRNP B/B' protein from DIARECT is expressed in the baculovirus / insect cell system. It corresponds to the alternatively spliced B' isoform with a molecular weight of 25.5 kDa.
