AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES

Autoimmune diseases are characterized by a failure of the immune system to distinguish between "self" and "non-self", representing therefore multifactorial assaults which may be systemic in nature (e.g. systemic lupus erythematosus, myositis) or directed to different individual organs (e.g. the thyroid gland, the liver).
